Advanced Training Program

"The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." — Lao Tsu

The Hunyuan Tai Chi Training Program Overview

Hunyuan Tai Chi training is divided into three basic parts:

• Gongfa - foundation arts

• Quanfa - practice forms

• Yongfa - applications

Foundation arts begin with standing and seated meditation, and include general health arts like Qigong, basic Tai Chi training gongs like Chansigong (silk-reeling), and specific higher-level training gongs like Tai Chi Ruler and Tai Chi Pole, as well as studies in history and theory. Foundation arts are both the foundation and the core of all Tai Chi practice, and continue throughout all levels of training. See list below for details.

Practice forms include both open-hand and weapons sets. The open-hand forms are divided into two 'roads': the Yilu or First Road, and the Erlu or Second Road. The Yilu are softer and slower, while the Erlu are harder and faster (the Erlu are also called the 'Cannon Fist' forms). Yilu and Erlu represent yin (soft) and yang (hard). Together they represent complete, balanced training. Both Roads include beginning, intermediate and advanced forms. Weapons sets complement the open-hand forms. See list below for details.

Applications include tuishou (push-hands), public performance, and personal change and transformation. These are the testing-grounds for experience gained, and feed back directly into foundation arts and forms practice. Push-hands includes five levels, from introductory through open sparring. Public performance includes solo and group performance in front of small and large audiences. It also includes teaching new beginning students. Personal transformation includes improvements in physical health, emotional well-being, calmness of mind, and a positive, centered outlook.
